CAMP SPIFIDA

One of Indiana’s most famous sons is sometimes regarded as a big kid himself. Two-time NASCAR Champion Tony Stewart, racer and proud co-owner of Stewart-Haas Racing, is known throughout the country as a huge supporter of children facing critical health issues. Tony’s charitable organization – The Tony Stewart Foundation – has awarded more than $4.8 million since 2004 to non-profit agencies nationally serving children and animals.

And, most notable among these many organizations, Tony supports specialty camps that serve kids facing significant challenges – physical or critical illness. Tony believes these amazing camps allow these kids to stretch their capabilities and enjoy simply “being a kid”.

In his home state, Tony is a staunch supporter of CAMP RILEY, HAPPY HOLLOW CAMP, CAMP JOHN WARVEL and CAMP JAMESON. Tony, through his foundation, provides significant funds for VICTORY JUNCTION GANG CAMP (North Carolina), CAMP SPIFADA (Pennsylvania), CENTER FOR COURAGEOUS KIDS (Kentucky) and a handful of other selected specialty camps for children.

NASCAR Illustrated named Tony Stewart its Person of the Year 2008 not because of his renowned driving talent but for his philanthropy. Editor Jay Pfeifer wrote, “Stewart has proven that he can be NASCAR’s most powerful force for good.” As for Tony, he gives more than money. He shares his energy, his reputation and he pulls people together to generate extraordinary results.

Today you can help these special kids. Make your donation. Help change a child’s summer. Help change a child’s independence!

Founded in 1951 as a residential camp for economically disadvantaged children, Happy Hollow now also serves children from foster families & those with medical challenges, including asthma.
Focused on building self-confidence & positive peer relationships

Happy Hollow Children’s Camp, Inc., is a private nonprofit agency of the United Way of Central Indiana and is accredited by the American Camp Association. Happy Hollow provides one-week residential camp sessions at little to no cost to the families of children, ages 7-14 years. The majority of campers come from financially disadvantaged families who live in the United Way of Central Indiana service area. Others include foster children and children coping with a loved one who has cancer. Happy Hollow also offers a week of camp for kids with moderate to severe asthma. With medical personnel on-site, the kids learn about managing their asthma as they participate in many outdoor activities otherwise off-limits to them at regular residential camps.

While at Happy Hollow’s 822-acre camp in Brown County, Indiana, all of the children participate in a safe, supportive and supervised outdoor residential camping program. They receive three home-cooked meals as well as healthy snacks and are supervised 24 hours per day with an 8:2 camper to counselor ratio. The Camp is designed to increase their understanding of the environment while they make friends, gain self-confidence and experience outdoor activities, including swimming, canoeing and kayaking, horseback riding, archery and hiking.

For nearly 60 years, Happy Hollow Children’s Camp has provided this opportunity and will continue to do so with the generous support of individuals, corporations and foundations. Since 1951, Happy Hollow has grown—in the size of the camp with increased acreage and updated facilities, as well as in the number of campers it serves each summer.   The camp’s mission of serving children in need has remained the same, and Happy Hollow strives to provide an educational and fun summer adventure to more children each year.

How can you help the kids of Happy Hollow Children’s Camp?

In just the past 10 years camper enrollment has increased by 33 percent - averaging 800 kids each summer. To date, Happy Hollow Children’s Camp has had the privilege of providing a life-enriching summer camp experience to more than 30,000 children. Funds raised will be invested and used to offset the camp fees – which continue to increase annually – and would assure these children continue to have an opportunity of a lifetime attending this unique camp.

Opened in 1955 to serve children with physical disabilities
Challenges campers' physical boundaries encouraging independence and self-esteem
www.rileyids.org/about/camp_riley

Imagine yourself climbing Cardiac Hill, scaling a climbing tower or swimming across Lake Riley. Any of these activities would be difficult enough for an able-bodied person. The campers performing these “Challenge Day” activities have physical disabilities – most are confined to a wheelchair. These kids embrace their Challenge Day activities and have the time of their lives!

Every summer, nearly 250 children, ages 8-18, from throughout Indiana and several other states come to Camp Riley. During their time at Camp they prove to themselves and others that their strength and will power define them – not their physical circumstances. From horseback riding to swimming to conquering the high ropes course, campers discover new confidence and make lifelong friends.

How can you help the kids of Camp Riley?

Tony and his foundation helps support Camp Riley through “endowed camperships” which invests funds in perpetuity to allow all children, regardless of their ability to pay, the opportunity to embrace the camp experience.

One week at Camp Riley cost $1,850/Two weeks at Camp Riley costs $2,400 – an insurmountable cost for many families already burdened with extraordinary health care costs. Riley Children’s Foundation subsidizes much of the fee through contributions received throughout the year. Families are asked to pay a fee determined by a sliding scale related to household income. These families find a way to get their children to Camp Riley year after year because of the enormous impact it has on their child’s life.
