NASCAR’S TONY STEWART PUTS THE PEDAL TO THE METAL FOR COURAGEOUS KIDS
The Tony Stewart Foundation conducted an official conference call this week with CCK’s Executive Director Roger Murtie to announce its sponsorship of the upcoming Courageous Kids Family Week. Currently operating its third summer of medical camping and having served over 5,000 medically fragile children and family members from 22 states and Canada, this announcement from The Tony Stewart Foundation continues the enormous strides The Center for Courageous Kids is making for our area’s bravest children. In describing the goals for his Foundation, Tony says “I’ve been fortunate enough to accomplish my dream of driving race cars for a living. The Tony Stewart Foundation will continue to provide the vehicle for me to give back to others needing a helping hand – a child enduring a serious or life-threatening illness, an abused or homeless animal, an injured race driver and his family.” These are his passions.
Each year, along with the illness specific summer sessions, and the school year family weekends - CCK conducts a Family Week multi-day summer camp experience where the entire family attends with the ill child and enjoys all the camp has to offer. While spending time horseback riding, canoeing, bowling and swimming, there are also opportunities for mom and dad to have some needed time together, bonding with other moms and dads who face the same challenges.
In support of this opportunity for the entire family to “accelerate fun” the Tony Stewart Foundation will provide financial sponsorship, in addition to NASCAR related camp props and hundreds of backpacks for our campers. One of the missions of the Tony Stewart Foundation is “to raise and donate funds to help care for critically ill children.” According to Ms. Joni Thompson, the Foundation’s Executive Director, “the board was extremely impressed by the quality of the experience provided by CCK to seriously ill children.” Thompson added, “this is the largest gift made by the Tony Stewart Foundation to a first time charity.”
Roger Murtie met with representatives of the Foundation in April. “We are overwhelmed by the Tony Stewart Foundation’s gift to support our Family Week. The Foundation has supported several world class medical camping programs and we are honored to have been added to the many good works they support.” The Center for Courageous Kids “Tony Stewart Foundation Accelerate Your Fun Family Week” begins August 4, 2010.

OFFICE DEPOT FOUNDATION'S
BACKPACK AWARDS PRESENTATION - JULY 22ND
Later this month, Tony returns to his home state with a full schedule of appearances leading up to the Allstate® 400 at the Brickyard® points race. On Thursday, July 22, Tony will join Mary Wong, President of the Office Depot Foundation, to present 5,000 backpacks to Indiana children – helping them to get ready for the new school year. This year’s presentation will take place at the Office Depot located at 126th & U.S. 31/Meridian Street in Carmel, IN – a community located due north of Indianapolis – starting at 1:30 EST.
The mission of the Office Depot Foundation (ODF) – “Listen Learn Care” is about making a difference in the life of a child or a family and in the quality of life in a community. This mission matches well with Tony’s foundation mission to serve children. Through the major corporate sponsorship of Office Depot with Tony’s #14 NASCAR team, the two charitable foundations have created a perfect way to work together serving children throughout the country. At the end of May 2010, Tony’s foundation provided 6,030 backpacks to 14 organizations serving children in 6 states – Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Florida, North Carolina. For the 2nd year, these backpacks were delivered to “specialty camps” including Camp Riley, Victory Junction Gang Camp, The Center for Courageous Kids, Camp Spifada, Camp Jameson & Happy Hollow Camp. Give Kids The World, Indiana Canine Assistant Network & 4 Paws for Ability plus 2 children’s hospitals also received the backpacks. The backpacks, valued at $79,960, were well-received by the kids and photos will soon be posted on the TSF Web site.
During 2009, the Office Depot Foundation donated its 2 MILLIONTH BACKPACK since the program began in 2001. If you put all those backpacks together at one time, they would weigh about as much as 7,843 of Tony Stewart’s Chevy Impalas! And if you laid them end-to-end, they would equal more than 214 laps around the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Office Depot Foundation recognized NASCAR driver Tony Stewart with the organization's highest honor: the "Listen Learn Care Award" earlier this year. This award reflects the Office Depot Foundation's mission - Listen Learn Care® − by honoring people who have been exceptionally creative and innovative in following their dreams and in helping others to realize their goals and aspirations. Mary Wong stated, “Tony exemplifies the award criteria through his outstanding support of the Office Depot Foundation National Backpack Program, as well as the ongoing charitable work carried out through the Tony Stewart Foundation.”
